New changes to Microsoft Office updates and what this means for you

by Infocouncil Team | June 2022 | Software Updates New changes to Microsoft Office updates and what this means for you

We have recently become aware of changes to the way Microsoft will support future updates to Microsoft Office. This change affects all existing installations of Office in your organisation that are on update channels other than the Monthly Enterprise Channel. For example, this change affects installations that are on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.

Key Points:

  • Unless opted out before 20th May 2022, Microsoft will have automatically configured those existing installations to begin receiving feature updates from the Monthly Enterprise Channel rather than their existing update channel. Any new installations of Office will also receive feature updates from the Monthly Enterprise Channel

  • In addition, Office will be configured to receive updates automatically from Microsoft directly from the internet.

Important Information:

  • Microsoft started rolling this out in late May and expects to complete the rollout in early June

  • Control: admin control via Microsoft 365 Apps Admin Center

Recommendations from Infocouncil:

  • Due to limitations in receiving early visibility on updates issues by Microsoft, we highly recommend that all Infocouncil users sit on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. This ensures that we have ample time to fully test any updates from Microsoft and deliver updates to you that are tested and bug-free.

  • In order to ensure that your organisation receiving feature updates from the Semi- Annual Enterprise Channel, please follow these steps:

    1. log into the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre - https://admin.microsoft.com

    2. navigate to "Settings" then "Org settings"

    3. click on "Office installation options"

    4. select Every Six months (Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel)

    5. click Save
